The Governor formed the Special Commission on State Parks in March 1999 (Executive Order 01.01.1999.06). The Commission will identify and assess the benefits received by the State from the State park system, including such factors as economic impact, outdoor adventures and eco-tourism, and the proper balance of recreation and resource management. Then, the Commission will prioritize programs to maximize benefits; develop guidelines to ensure the fiscal stability of the park system; and recommend ways to market and celebrate the official "Year of Maryland State Parks" in the year 2000.
